Narcan nasal spray for reversing opioid overdose

in: Health and Well-Being

Tens of thousands of people die each year from overdosing on opioid drugs. Since the 1970s, naloxone (more commonly known by its brand name, Narcan) has existed as an effective, rapid treatment to reverse opioid overdoses. However, overdoses would often prove fatal before trained medics could administer the life saving drug. The National Institude of Drug Abuse partnered with the private sector to develop a nasal spray that could be pre-packaged and required minimal expertise to administer. Naloxone nasal spray is commercially available and continues to save lives across the nation.
